How these five hours passed, we hardly knew – we were close to Agra – no, we passed through the streets of Agra and we were told, we were at ‘The Taj’. The full moon shone in the sky. The entire campus is as if filled with a milky hue. Magnificent was the word that came out spontaneously in unison.
Leaving our buses a short distance from the main monument, we got down, our roll call was taken and we were systematically proceeded towards our favorite destination, and soon we were at the main gate – the Taj, the dream marble chandelier in white I was shining in all my glory. We were amazed to see the beauty, majesty and grandeur of the domed structure. The moonlit complex exuded glamor – the Taj looked like a white swan standing in a vast lake of milk.
Fountains bubbling and bursting all along the way. There were green lawns on their sides. Crowds of people, men, women and children, all trying to find their way out – it was indeed a crowd and there were a lot of foreigners – many of them looking at the monument as if in complete wonder.
We walked, rather wandered, to reach the main stage, took off our shoes as needed and left them with the custodians. We were on the main platform above which stood the great monument. Four towers stood like sentinels at the four corners.
Our history teacher gathered us together and told us how the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan had built this monument as a mausoleum for his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal and wanted himself to be buried beside her after she died.
