Answer:
Lashkoff has become a beggar not by circumstances but by his own choice. This becomes clear from his conversation with Sergei. In front of him he pretends that he cannot get any work.

Olga knew that Lushkoff would not work. So she felt pity on him like a true mother and worked for him. She sat in front of him. When he did not do the work he scolded him. This soon resulted in a change of heart. And he started working. He stopped drinking and became a good person.
