Question 1.
Sometimes we see something beautiful and attractive and after that we remember it for a long time. Do you remember if this ever happened to you? If so, what was it ? What do you remember about it now? Are the details of what you saw or the emotions you experienced at that time still fresh in your mind? Think for a few minutes, then share your ideas with the class.
Answer
Attempts are to be made individually at the class level. However, a sample answer is given for the guidance of students.
Yes, such an incident happened with me. After this I remembered it for a long time. I once went to see Taj Mahal with my parents in the month of October. It was a moonlit night. The pleasant and fragrant air was making the place pleasant. I was standing in front of the Taj in the moonlit night. I was thrilled to see her beauty at that moment.
For a few moments I forgot about myself. The whiteness reflected from it looked like fairies. The grass lawn in front added to its beauty and grace. The building looked absolutely magnificent and magical. The feelings were indescribable. These were just like when one finds something that is most sought after. When I left from there, the beauty of the Taj was still imprinted on my heart. It is still fresh in my heart like Wordsworth’s ‘Daffodils’. I can’t forget it.

Question 7.
1. Read the second stanza again, in which Wordsworth compares the song of the lone reaper to the song of the nightingale and the cuckoo. Based on your reading (and your imagination), copy and complete the table below. (Work in groups of four, then discuss briefly in class.)
Place | heard by | impact on listener
solitary reaper | Scottish Highlands | Poet | mesmerizes him |
Nightingale | |||
Cuckoo |
2. Why do you think Wordsworth chose the song of the nightingale and the cuckoo to compare to the song of the Solitary Reaper?
3. As you read the second stanza, what images come to your mind? Be prepared to describe them in your own words to the rest of the class. (Don’t be afraid to go beyond what the poet has written.)
Answer
1.
Place | heard by | impact on listener
solitary reaper | Scottish Highlands | Poet | mesmerizes him |
Nightingale | Arabian sands/desert | weary travelers | Passengers feel refreshed, fatigue disappears |
Cuckoo | Farthest Hebrides | sailors | sailors feel thrilled |
2. Wordsworth has deliberately chosen the songs of the nightingale and the cuckoo. This is because these are the sweetest and freshest of all bird songs. By comparing these, the poet wants to say that the song of the reaper alone was completely incomparable to the song of the nightingale or the cuckoo bird. His song was even more melodious than hers.
3. Yes, I am able to see mental pictures of places. Their details are as follows:
- This is a huge desert. The sun is raining fire. I see a group of mentally and physically exhausted passengers. They are walking with difficulty on the sand dunes. They are looking for an oasis. Soon they find one and reach there. Then they hear the sweet song of a nightingale coming from somewhere. They feel thrilled. Their fatigue goes away due to the effect of singing.
- It is spring time. The Hebrides islands are located there. They are located in the far north-east of Scotland. There is complete silence around the incident site. Soon a ship is seen circling the islands. The sailors decided to anchor there. Then, they hear the song of the cuckoo bird coming from somewhere. It thrills them. They feel excited and decide to stay there for the night. The song of the cuckoo bird makes that place a heaven of joy for them.
Question 8.
In the sixth line of the first stanza we read:
“…and sings in a sad voice…”
This “s” sound is repeated at the beginning of singing and under stress. Poets often do this. do you know why ? Do you know what this “poetic repetition” is called? Can you find other examples of this in The Solitary Reaper?
Answer
Yes, poets often repeat the sounds of different words. This is done so that music and lyricism can be added to the poem. This repetition is called ‘alliteration’ in poetic language.
There are other such examples in The Solitary Reaper. These are as follows:
- → Repetition of t sound in ‘Yon lonely highland las’
- Repetition of the sound of → The silence of the sea/Among the farthest Hebrides’
- → Repetition of T sound in ‘vaadi number flow’
- Repetition of ‘1’ sound → ‘heard, motionless and still’.
Note: Students can choose such phrases from the text themselves.
Question 9.
In the first stanza some words or phrases are used to show that the girl working in the fields is alone. What are those words and phrases? What effect do they have on the mind of the reader?
Answer
These words are:
Yon lonely highland girl, alone (in the field), alone reaping and singing, Stop here, pass gently, alone she reaps…,
The effect these words create is one of beauty and mystery. ‘Beauty’ because the whole scene of the Reaper alone looks like a painting set against the backdrop of a hill. ‘Mystery’ because the lonely girl has no one. She looks absolutely ‘magical’. His song adds beauty to the entire scene.
Question 10.
