Read and find out (pages 32 and 34)
How did a book become a turning point in Richard Ebright’s life?
The book ‘The Travels of Monarch X’ changed the life of Richard Ebright. This was because it told them how monarch butterflies migrate to Central America. This opened up a wide world of science to this inquisitive young collector.
How did his mother help him?
How did Richard’s mother help him become a scientist? (CBSE 2014)
His mother was a source of great inspiration for him. He always encouraged them and supported them continuously. She brought friends for him during the day. She herself worked with him at night. In this way he helped him.
What lesson did Bright learn when he didn’t win anything at the science fair? (Imp.) (CBSE 2011)
Ebright learns that real experiments will reward him. This was not just a neat display of things. Actual experiments showed things clearly and proved the point. The subject he knew was about the workings of insects. He was doing this work for the last several years.
Then what experiments and projects does he pursue?
He took the eighth grade project. This was to find the cause of a viral disease that killed all monarch caterpillars.
His science fair project the following year was to test the theory about butterflies. It was such that the Viceroy butterflies imitated kings. His next theory was to see if birds eat kings. He found that kings did not like birds.
After this he started research. This led to their discovery of an unknown insect hormone.
What qualities go into the making of a scientist?
These qualities are: a first-class mind, curiosity, the desire to win for the right reasons.
Think About It (Page 38)
How can one become a scientist, economist, historian…? Does it involve reading many books on the subject? Does it involve observing, thinking and experimenting? (v. imp)
One can become a scientist, economist or historian. He cannot become like this even after reading many books on the subject. First of all, the person must have a top-notch mind. One must have the ability and will to win for the right reasons. With all this the results should be sought through experiments. It involves a sharp mind, observing, thinking and testing things through experiments.
You must have read about cells and DNA in your science books. Discuss the work of Richard Ebright in light of what you have studied. If you had the opportunity to work on projects and experiments like Richard Ebright, what area would you want to work in and why?
I have read a little about cells and DNA in science books. Richard Ebright’s work is really important. This will help scientists and other people to know about the origin of diseases etc. This would be possible because the field of experiments in cells is vast. The study of cells and DNA provides knowledge about heredity and what causes it. If I ever get a chance to work like Ebright, I will take up this field. This will help humanity to fight various diseases.
Talk About It (page 38)
You too must be thinking about some things around you. Share these questions with your class and try to answer them.
Like others, I have also thought about some changes around me. I have tried to consider their answers. These questions are:
- Why do mango leaves change color?
- Where do day and night go?
- How do pigeons return to their roosts after long flights to distant places?
- How do small Peepal seeds keep within themselves the characteristics of big Peepal trees?
Science teachers may have concrete answers.
