Answer:
Horace Danby loves collecting books. He likes rare, expensive books.

Why does he steal every year?
Answer:
He used to loot every year. He looted so much money that it could last for a whole year. Therefore there was no need to rob him again and again.
He was a common thief because he stole only once a year. He stole only to buy rare and expensive books.

Answer:
This is the voice of the lady of the house. Horace thinks she is the mistress of the house. But she is a thief like him who works as a landlady.

Did you begin to suspect before the end of the story that the woman was not the person Horace Danby thought she was? If yes, when and how did you realize this?
Answer:
Well, initially the woman was seen at the scene. I did not doubt him. But when she said “I’ve always liked the wrong kind of people”, I became suspicious of her. She then said that if Horace did ‘something’ for her, she would let him go.
Question 2.
What are some of the subtle ways in which the woman deceives Horace Danby into thinking she is the lady of the house? Why doesn’t Horace suspect that something is wrong? (v. imp)
Answer:
At first, the woman speaks confidently to deceive Horace. There is firmness in his voice. She smiles at him while talking. As she continues speaking, her voice also becomes harsh. Then she threatens him with the idea of ’jail’. In this way she influences him to become the landlady.

“Horace Danby was good and respectable – but not entirely honest”. Why do you think this description fits Horace? Why can’t he be classified as a common thief?
Answer:
This description fits Horace Danby well. Horace has a good reputation as ‘a good, honest citizen’. Then he steals only once a year. He hides his theft under the profession of locksmith. He also likes to read books. Therefore, for these reasons he cannot be placed in the category of a common thief.

Horace Danby was a careful planner but he still faltered. Where did he go wrong and why? (v. imp)
Answer:
He was indeed a meticulous planner. He would meticulously plan each year just before committing the theft. But he faltered. He did not pay attention to the woman’s sweet, clever and sly words. This could be because he was in the house as a thief. And he was caught red handed. The fear of going to jail dulled his mind from understanding the woman’s tricks. Then he was a thief.

Do you think Horace Danby was unfairly punished, or that he deserved what he got?
Answer:
I think Horace Danby was unfairly punished for that theft. He was a thief, there is no doubt about it. But he was not a complete thief. This is in the sense of material gain from theft. However, all physical evidence was against it. In the eyes of the law he was a thief. Hence he was punished. But in the spirit of justice, something important was important. This was: This did not make him a thief.
Question 2.
Do intentions justify actions? Would you, like Horace Danby, do something wrong if you felt that your ends justified the means? Do you think there. Are there situations in which acting less than honestly is excusable?
Answer:
It is not correct to say that intentions justify actions. In the case of Horace Danby his intention was to be free. If the lady of the house had been true to her decision, he would have been safe. His intention to open the safe did not justify his actions. He was proved wrong in that. The reason for this was that his actions took him to jail. However, there was nothing to justify it.
I, like Horace Danby, will do no wrong if my ends are consistent with the means. Actually, we should see that wrong is wrong. Then we must analyze our actions and their consequences.
It is also true that situations keep coming in life. It is forgivable for them to work less honestly. There are such aspects of life. Man gets involved in this without any mistake.
